Former Chief Justice David Maraga has criticized the government for what he termed as confusion in managing higher education policies.

Speaking in Meru, Maraga questioned the rationale behind first increasing university fees and later slashing it after an outcry.

Mr Maragaz who is eying the presidency, said said the government should have conducted a pilot programme or feasibility study before implementing such significant changes.

“There’s no way you implement such a major fee hike only to reverse it shortly afterward. That shows a lack of planning and coordination,” said Maraga.

His remarks came even after students from various universities welcomed the government’s decision to reduce tuition fees for all academic programmes in public universities.

The students praised the move, saying it would ease financial pressure on learners and their families, many of whom have been struggling with the high cost of education.

They stressed the importance of timely release of funds to institutions to prevent disruptions in services and learning.

The students also called on the government to pay attention to other challenges affecting university students, such as rising cases of alcohol and drug abuse, which continue to threaten academic performance and mental health.
