President William Ruto has announced multi-billion shilling development programmes for Meru County, targeting electricity, housing, roads, healthcare, education, agriculture, and urban growth, among other sectors.
Among the flagship projects is a Sh2.4 billion rural electrification programme that will connect 26,000 households across the county.
In housing, he said the government has allocated Sh5 billion for the Affordable Housing Programme in six towns: Meru (Imenti North), Maua (Igembe South), Nkubu (Imenti South), Timau (Buuri), Mikinduri (Tigania East), and Uuru (Tigania West).
The plan also includes the construction of 17 fresh produce markets and Sh2.5 billion for 5,780 student hostels.
Infrastructure will receive a major boost, with Sh2.4 billion released to revive stalled road projects and the county’s road budget expected to more than double by the 2025/2026 financial year.
The Sh7 billion Nithi Bridge project is also scheduled to commence in November 2025.
On agriculture, Meru farmers are set to benefit from miraa exports to Djibouti starting next month.
Healthcare will also get a boost through a Sh1 billion upgrade of Meru Level 5 Hospital while the national government has committed to transfer and fencing of Meru National Park to the county government.
President Ruto committed to allocate Sh150 million for Kinoru Stadium.
Additionally, Sh2 billion has been allocated for water provision.
