Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi has defended himself from those opposed to his anticipated nomination to the Cabinet Secretary position.
During his address to Imenti South residents at Kamundi stadium, Igoji East during a football tournament match, Kathuri said that Meru should not be divided on subtribe basis.
“As Meru community, we should not be judged based on our subtribe basis. Those are retrogressive politics” he said.
“My position is this, even if we have a leader from Igembe who serve for 30years it’s fine. If he is from Imenti and had good development track record, let him remain. And so be it if he is from Tigania because we are all from the Meru community” he added.
Kathuri regretted that an elected MP is on record preaching divisive politics.
He noted that President William Ruto through his broad based government is fighting to end tribalism in the country.
“It is regrettable that when President Ruto is trying to unite the nation, one of us here is trying to preach subtribe politics. We need to embrace love for each other as the Meru community” said Kathuri.
His response comes after Tigania East MP Mpuru Aburi hit out on his CS bid, saying that the position should be given to a person from Central Imenti or Tigania region.
The Meru senator said that he is aware of Meru residents lobbying for his appointment to the position of a Cabinet Secretary, saying he is ready for whatever task he is given.
“For the last two weeks locals have been calling for my appointment to the CS position. Am sure they have seen a potential in the leader they are talking about. They must be listened to because Kenya has to move forward,” he noted.
He reiterated that he has been in the fore front in fighting for the agriculture sector in the region.
“I have listened to Igembe people during a public participation on miraa bill so that it can be removed from the category of drugs, and I heard there concern. Tigania people have also sent their message over state of agriculture in the county that they want addressed. Am ready to take them forward to achieve their agenda” he said.
In acceptance to the call Kathuri said, “If that is the will of God, am ready to take them to where they want. If the Meru community has seen that agriculture has gone down and we have no other occupation other than milk, tea, bananas, green peas, macadamia, miraa, coffee, pyrethrum and cotton, I offer myself to lead you in restoring it”
Defending Water CS Eric Mugaa position, he noted that President Ruto has expressed respect to Genz’s by offering him the position, saying that long serving leaders should mentor the young.
“I commit to support the youth and Genz’s in leadership to realize their full strength. This is because you are the future of our Country,” he said.
“We thank President Ruto for giving one of you (Genz’s) an opportunity to serve as the CS. We will fully support him because he stands a chance to serve more years than some of us who are aging out of leadership” he concluded.
