Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia has announced plans to establish three new municipalities in Laare, Nkubu, and Mikinduri by the end of this year.
This marks a major step in his administration’s efforts to spur localized developments and attract external investments.
Governor Mutuma emphasized that the push for municipal status is part of his broader strategy to decentralize development and tap into additional streams of funding, particularly from international partners.
“Once these areas attain municipality status, they will be eligible for more direct development support, including substantial funding from donors such as the World Bank,” said the governor.
The move is expected to improve infrastructure, increase access to urban planning resources, and enhance service delivery in the three growing towns.
According to the governor, formal recognition as municipalities will open the doors to urban investment programs, creating employment opportunities and raising the quality of life for residents.
Currently, Meru County has three recognized municipalities including Meru, Maua, and Timau.
The addition of Laare, Nkubu, and Mikinduri would reflect the county’s rapid urban expansion and increasing demand for structured urban development.
If realized, the creation of the new municipalities could cement Governor Mutuma’s legacy as a pro-development leader with a vision to modernize rural-urban centers across Meru county.
