Meru County Commissioner Jacob Ouma has raised concern over the safety of a three-storey building in Laare Town, Igembe North constituency, warning that it could collapse and endanger lives.
The structure, which houses a dental clinic, a guest house, a pub and several ground floor businesses, has reportedly tilted towards an adjacent building, with its stability seemingly dependent on the neighbouring structure.

Ouma, who toured the site alongside Igembe North Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Martin Muhia, the NGAP Igembe North commander, chiefs and police officers from Laare Police Station, said the building poses a serious risk, especially during the ongoing rains.
He noted that the building has shown signs of structural weakness since last year, with visible cracks and a noticeable tilt raising questions about its integrity.
“This building looks unstable and could collapse at any time, particularly with the heavy rains we are experiencing. We do not want to witness loss of lives when this can be prevented,” said Ouma.
The County Commissioner revealed that experts from the National Construction Authority (NCA) had been called in to assess the structure, but had yet to present any report.
“We have brought in NCA experts to assess the building, but they have not submitted any report. We need a clear confirmation on whether this building is safe or not so that we can decide whether to demolish it or allow occupants to continue operating,” he said.

He emphasized that the government will not gamble with the lives of residents and business operators, adding that all buildings with questionable structural integrity across the county will be assessed to ensure public safety.
The warning comes in the wake of recent building collapses in Meru County, including a fatal incident in Maua Town near the main stage last Sunday, as well as another earlier collapse that claimed one life.
Separately, Ouma addressed ongoing security concerns in the region, stating that an anti-banditry operation is currently underway and is not politically motivated.
He announced that a National Police Reservists (NPR) vehicle has been returned to support patrols, assuring residents that the government is committed to eradicating banditry.
“We are dealing firmly with those involved in banditry, including sellers of stolen livestock and illegal firearms. We will restore security in this area,” he said.
