Two people have been shot in separate insecurity incidents in Mutuati, Igembe North Constituency, Meru County, as police pursue suspected raiders who stole 90 goats from a village in the area.
Police have arrested one suspect in connection with the incidents, with security officers investigating his claim that he is a National Police Reservist (NPR) from Isiolo County.
Mutuati Sub-County Police Commander Bakari Juma Mwanauli said suspected bandits raided Mworo wa Mwatu village on Sunday and drove away 90 goats.
A woman was shot in the hand during the raid, prompting the deployment of a multi-agency security team to pursue the raiders and recover the stolen livestock.
“We immediately dispatched a multi-agency team to pursue the suspects and recover the stolen goats,” Juma said.
In a separate incident reported yesterday at Ithata village, Concella Mugambi was shot in the leg in an incident allegedly involving herders accused of invading farms in the area.
Mugambi was rushed to Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital, where she is receiving treatment.
Juma said officers responding to the incidents arrested a suspect identified as Abudullahaman Abdulahi, who claimed during questioning to be an NPR officer attached to Isiolo County.
Police are investigating the claim to establish whether the suspect is a serving reservist and whether he participated in or accompanied the suspected raiders.
The commander said security officers were continuing to pursue the suspects, with efforts focused on recovering the stolen animals and bringing those responsible to justice.
He assured residents that security agencies had intensified patrols to protect lives and property, including during the day and at night.
Juma also cautioned National Police Reservists against misusing government-issued firearms, warning them to handle the weapons responsibly and use them only for their designated security duties.
