President William Ruto has lauded the rapid growth and transformation of the dairy sector in Meru county saying Meru Dairy Union milk processor is the best in the country.
He also announced a new raft of government interventions to further support farmers and accelerate gains in agricultural productivity.
Speaking during the 10th Annual Dairy Farmers Field Day at the Meru ASK Showground, President Ruto said reforms in the agricultural sector are bearing fruit, with farmers now earning more and contributing to a stronger economy.
“Our reforms in the agricultural sector continue to yield results, with increased productivity and higher farmer earnings,” he said.

Ruto noted that Kenya’s dairy industry has experienced robust growth in recent years.
In particular, he highlighted the performance of Meru Dairy Cooperative Union, which he said has grown to become the top milk processor in the country.
“When I was here last year, Meru Dairy Union was position two in Kenya in matters milk production. Today I am happy to come here at a time when Meru Dairy has become the number one milk processor in Kenya,” said President Ruto.
The President emphasized that his visit to Meru was not by accident but a deliberate move to show support to farmers and recognize their contribution to the national economy.
“I have come here today on purpose and not because I have lost my way or because I didn’t have work to do. I have come here on purpose to encourage you because you are doing a great job and the government of Kenya is going to stand with you,” he told farmers.
President Ruto said that in 2022, dairy farmers were earning between Sh 33 and Sh 40 per litre of milk, which his government sought to increase through policy changes and support for cooperatives.
He praised Meru Dairy for surpassing the target price, noting that farmers are now receiving Sh 50 per litre, with processors paying as much as Sh 53.

“In 2022, farmers were getting Sh 33 and in other places Sh 40. We said we want to make that price rise to Sh 50. I want to thank Meru Dairy because they are paying Sh 53 where the farmer gets Sh 50 and the others in the middle and the processor get Sh 3” said the Head of State.
The President affirmed that his government remains committed to supporting the agricultural sector, which he described as central to Kenya’s Economy.
He called on farmers to continue embracing technology, innovation, and partnerships that will drive long-term sustainability and self reliance.
