Former Interior CS Fred Matiangi has cancelled his Tour to Mount Kenya due to the aftermath of Saba Saba demonstrations where people were killed and property destroyed in protests across the country.
Former Agriculture CS Peter Munya, who was to host the presidential aspirant, said they learned of a plot to infiltrate their meetings and cause more violence.
“They were to cause mayhem, do destruction and injure or kill people so that our meetings can seem as if they are violent,” he said.
Matiangi was to visit Laikipia,Meru and Isiolo from Thursday to Saturday.
Munya who is the Party of National Unity (PNU) party leader said he prefers Dr Matiang’i to be the opposition’s presidential flag bearer.
Munya spoke at a press briefing in Meru on Wednesday evening.
The former Meru governor said that killing of Kenyans, burning down of businesses, and looting of several other properties had raised political tensions in the country.
“Many bad things have happened, destruction of property and killing of civilians by police. Such bloodshed and destruction witnessed is not good. We want to allow Kenyans to mourn instead of holding our meetings,” he said.
Munya said the destruction of property is mainly caused by criminals and paid goons sponsored by the government.
In Meru Magunas Supermarket was burned down while Selenite and Bei Sawa supermarkets were looted.
He cited a case in Nairobi during June 25 and Saba Saba where goons wielding big wooden sticks even communicated with the police.
“Kenyans are not stupid. They know that the destruction is not caused by demonstrators who are mainly peaceful and the opposition is not involved,” Munya said.
He said the international commnunity should look into the situation as the fundamental human rights are being violated due to abduction and killing of innocent demonstrators.
The Meru governor emphasized he is still in the Meru gubernatorial race in 2027.
