A renewed crackdown on illegal gambling has been launched in Laare town, with authorities destroying eight gaming machines in a decisive move to curb the growing vice.
Speaking during a press briefing after the operation, Igembe North Deputy County Commissioner Martin Muhia said the exercise, conducted jointly with chiefs and officers from the National Government Administration Police Unit (NGAPU), is part of an ongoing campaign to wipe out unlicensed gambling businesses in the area.
“The impact of these illegal machines is devastating. Our children are getting addicted, families are breaking down, and cases of fights linked to gambling are on the rise,” said Muhia.
The confiscated machines, reportedly belonging to a trader identified as Mr. Kammami, were destroyed on site as a warning to others engaging in the unlawful trade.
Muhia noted that despite more than 50 premises being licensed to sell alcohol within the sub-county, some operators have illegally introduced gambling activities, taking advantage of their permits.
“No one has been licensed to operate gambling here. Those hiding behind bar licenses to run betting operations are breaking the law, and we will deal with them accordingly,” he warned.
He added that complaints from residents, particularly involving school-going children and family disputes, had prompted the intensified operation.
“The crackdown will not stop. We are aware of these illegal businesses, and we will continue working with NGAPU officers and local administrators until this vice is completely eradicated,” Muhia said.
