Safaricom CEO Dr Peter Ndegwa who is also Meru University of Science and Technology Chancellor has urged Kenyans to venture into the overseas job market amid shrinking opportunities locally.
Mr Ndegwa spoke at the institution after he oversaw graduation of over 3000 students at the institution.
“I have heard it said by many Kenyans that there are no jobs after graduation. However, I would like to demystify this by explaining that there is a big job market for employment as well as for self-employment which is not limited to the Kenyan boarders,” he said.
He said the 4th industrial revolution has turned the world into a global village.
“Literally you can now wake up in Ngai Ndethia this morning and have lunch in London this afternoon, that’s just 8 hours away. You can make use of the internet, the social media, your data, your creativity; even in the comfort of your home to make a living.”
This is where you need your skills learnt in this university to make a difference for yourself as well as for the community at large. We are sending you out there and saying to you, make us proud, use the skills learnt here both in and out of the classroom and the world is going to be your footstool,” he said.
He urged Kenyans to take advantage of new innovations in internet, Artificial Intelligence (AI) in order succeed in future.
Meru University of Science and technology Vice Chancellor Romanus Odhiambo said they have created global opportunities for their students.
He said the past three years they have expanded our reach beyond borders, sending students to life changing exchange programs in the Netherlands, Italy, Canada among many other countries.
“These experiences have not only enriched their education but also opened their hearts and minds to new cultures, ideas and possibilities.”
Our focus on internationalization is a reflection of our promise to offer world class education – one that prepares our students to succeed anywhere in the world.”
“We want them to leave here as global citizens ready to make a difference, no matter where life takes them,” Romanus said.
