The Uganda national soccer team made a dramatic comeback at the Nelson Mandela stadium in the last minutes of the game against South Africa to make it a 3-3 draw,sealing their place in the quarters in Championship of Africa football.
Kitara FC forward Jude Ssemugubi opened the scoring in the 31th minute after a quick counter attacks from the cranes.
The cranes went into half time with a 1-0 lead but their lead was deemed after two quick goals from South Africa. The goals in the 55 minutes from R.Mphalele and 58 minutes from T.Kutumela.
In the 83 minute Uganda keeper dud a costly blunder to leave the goalpost in chase of the ball and South Africa punished Uganda through N.Ndlondlo.
Fans who had lost hope and started leaving but drama was far from over after Uganda won a penalty after a player was brought down inside the 18 yard box.
Winger Allan Okello converted the penalty in the 88th minute two minutes later the cranes won another penalty after one south Africa player handled the ball forcing the referee to stop play and look at the clips from the Video Assistant Referee.
Uganda was awarded a penalty in additional time and some cranes fans started trooping back. It was a nervy moment for both teams as Uganda skipper picked the ball to take the penalty.
Roger Torach who plies his trade for Vipers SC converted the penalty to ensure Uganda topped the group with seven points ahead of Algeria who drew 0-0 with Niger.
Uganda and Algeria will wait today to know which teams they will play against.
Kenya who emerged top of group A will play Madagascar in the Nairobi while Tanzania who also emerged top of Group B will face Morroco in Dar El Salaam.
