Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has issued a stern warning to road contractors delaying government projects, saying those failing to deliver will be removed from the jobs.

Prof Kindiki said the Government would no longer tolerate contractors who slow down projects despite having been paid, insisting that Kenyans must get value for public funds.

“From now on, we have no business with road contractors who delay the work of the people of Kenya yet they have been paid by the Government,” the Deputy President said.

Speaking on Tuesday 29 September 2026, during an inspection of development projects in Mathira Constituency, Nyeri County, Prof Kindiki said his responsibility was to ensure government projects were completed on time and according to the required standards.

“All the lazy contractors who are slowing down the work assigned to them will be kicked out. My work is to ensure the government’s projects are completed on time and meet required standards. There is no place for those playing around with the work assigned to them,” he said.

The Deputy President inspected the ongoing tarmacking of the Mungetho-Thuthwa-Kathutho-Katiki Road before addressing residents at Thuthwa Trading Centre.

The road is among several infrastructure projects being implemented in the constituency, with other roads including Muthua-Kiawarigi-Kabiruini, Karura-Kiawarigi and Kiamwangi-Kahuru-Gitemaini at various stages of construction.

Prof Kindiki said improved road infrastructure would have a direct impact on farmers, particularly those involved in dairy and coffee production.

“This region is home to hardworking farmers. For a long period, this area has been left behind. Milk gets spoiled on the way; when it rains, milk trucks cannot pass, and the milk gets spoiled,” he said.

He said the roads would help farmers transport their produce to markets while reducing losses caused by poor road networks.

The Deputy President said the government had allocated Sh45 billion for the construction of 775 kilometres of roads across Nyeri County’s six constituencies — Mathira, Othaya, Mukurwe-ini, Kieni, Nyeri Town and Tetu.

The government is also expanding electricity connections in the county, with an additional Sh650 million allocated to connect about 12,000 more homes.

Prof Kindiki said 13 modern markets were also being developed across the county. Among them is Marikiti Market in Karatina, which has recently been completed.

Other projects he noted includes 10 affordable housing developments and six hostel projects at various stages.

The second in command also highlighted the revival of Ruring’u Stadium in Nyeri Town, which had remained stalled for more than 15 years.

He said construction had resumed and the facility was expected to be completed before the end of the year.

In the health sector, the government has allocated Sh1 billion towards upgrading Mwai Kibaki Teaching and Referral Hospital in Othaya to a Level Six facility and another Sh1 billion has been set aside to revamp Nyeri Level Five Hospital.

Prof Kindiki said the projects demonstrated the Government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and public services in the region.

He also used the visit to call for political tolerance and unity among residents of the Mt Kenya region, warning politicians against turning political differences into hostility.

“Those of us who come from this region of Mount Kenya, let us maintain our unity. Let us not fight because of politics. Politics will come and go, but we will continue to be one community,” he said.

The Deputy President urged politicians across the political divide to allow citizens to freely support candidates and parties of their choice without intimidation.

“All politicians, across all political sides, should calm down. Do not incite citizens to stone someone’s vehicle or harass someone simply because you disagree with them,” he said.

Prof Kindiki said politicians should focus on selling their policies and allow voters to make their own choices.

“Sell your politics, sell your policies, and let the other person sell theirs. Let the people decide who will win and lead us,” he said.

He was accompanied by Nyeri Senator Wahome Wamatinga, Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi, Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge, Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina, Members of the County Assembly and other leaders.
