Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi has hinted at running for governor in the 2027 General Election, saying he is weighing calls from residents urging him to challenge incumbent Governor Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia.

Kathuri, who spoke during a Morning Radio show at Muuga FM said he had received delegations from across Meru County and numerous phone calls from residents asking him to vie for the county’s top seat, adding that he was still consulting before making a final decision.

“I have received delegations from all over the county, delegation after delegation, and phone calls from residents wanting me to be the Meru governor. I am still listening to their concerns,” he said.

The senator, however, maintained that he had not formally decided to enter the race, saying he wanted to consult his family, reflect and seek God’s guidance before making the announcement.

“I am a senator, and there is no time I made a decision to vie for governor. I am listening to the people of Meru, my family and waiting for God’s way,” he said.

Kathuri said he had previously pledged to give Governor Mutuma ample time to deliver on his promises to residents but acknowledged that growing public pressure had forced him to reflect on his political future.

“I have heard you people. I have remained with one step to officially declare. To make a political move is not that easy. I want the next process to be a time of reflection, prayer and fasting with my family,” he said.

He added that residents had seen his leadership, management and governance capabilities, describing their calls as a great favour.

On the challenges facing residents, Kathuri said the government’s priority should be to create an enabling environment for people to conduct business freely, adding that leaders should focus on improving livelihoods.

The senator also condemned rising political violence and goonism in Meru, accusing an some politicians of financing and controlling gangs to disrupt political activities.

“Meru people are not known for violence or goonism, and it is unfortunate that those goons are paid and controlled by a certain politician. I condemn such acts,” he said.

Kathuri urged political leaders to respect one another and allow aspirants to sell their agendas without intimidation.

“Let’s give everyone respect and ample time to sell their agenda to the people. I am very ready to give even my home compound to any politician who wants to hold a political meeting there,” he said.

On national politics, Kathuri reaffirmed his support for the Kenya Kwanza administration, citing ongoing infrastructure development across the country, particularly efforts to revive road projects that had stalled from 2013 onwards due to budgetary constraints.

He also threw his weight behind Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, saying he was firmly aligned with the DP and would support the administration.

“If the President does not pick Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, it will be hard. It can’t be. I am totally aligned to our son DP Kindiki, and my focus is to support the Kenya Kwanza administration,” Kathuri said.

Adding that “I have not seen any other presidential candidate who suggests nominating any leader from Meru as a DP. But let’s talk about that when we cross there,” he said.
