The Imenti Development forum (IDF) has raised concern over rising use of goons to target opponents in Meru, calling for urgent intervention by the authorities.

IDF vice chairperson Kairu Magambo cited the recent attack on Mucisian Kamanu when he presented a petition opposing the construction of an airstrip in Imenti forest.

Magambo also condemned the attack meted on Nyambene TV crew while at Ngundune in Tigania West.

“We have seen many cases of goon activities in Meru and particularly the Imenti region. Democracy dictates that people are allowed to conduct their meetings freely. This is a worrying trend and the authorities must ensure this is addressed immediately,” Magambo said.

The lobby, which has moved to court to oppose the construction of an airstrip in Imenti forest also condemned the disobedience of court orders by authorities.

“The public participation carried out by the Kenya Forest Service and supported by the Meru Governor is not only worrying but a mock at the Courts. This is a contravention of the law and IDF demands that the Conservator of the forest and any county staff who took part in the forum be punished and held in contempt of court,” IDF said in a statement.

IDF also called on the government to end marginalization of the Imenti region in terms of development and employment.
