The government plans to use the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) in a bid to boost TVET enrollment by recruiting 2 million people in technical schools by the end of the year.
Principal Secretary State Department for Technical, Vocational Education and Training (TVET), Ministry of Education Dr. Esther Thaara Muoria said measures have been put in aim of recruiting at least two million people in technical schools by the end of the year.lace to ensure the target is met.
She spoke on Monday afternoon after meeting with the NGAO officers from Meru, Embu, Isiolo, Tharaka Nithi, Marsabit and Samburu Counties.
She insisted that they are ready to have a conversation with the aim of recruiting at least two million people in technical schools by the end of the year.
“When we took over as Kenya Kwanza government, we had only about 350,000 students in TVET institutions. It is now the decision of the government that we are scaling up to 2 million,” Muoria said.
She promised that NGAO officers will help with the transition, especially the chiefs and the assistant chiefs who live in the society.
“We want them to help us young people mop up the TVET institutions which we have in every county in this country,” Dr. Muoria said.
She said they have not less than 254 approved curriculum in the TVET institutions noting that they have recently employed 5500 trainers since the Kenya Kwanza government came to power.
“They have been reskilled on Competency Based Education and Training (CBET) to enable them to train the young people.
She said it is possible to have all the young people acquire skills in the areas of their interest.
The PS urged young people to enroll in courses and learn skills to earn a living instead of waiting to be misused by politicians in the campaign period.
“We have the curriculum, we have also created the occupation standards into which we are able to craft our young people as a country. We are going in the electioneering period and until we give the young people hope and place them in a space where they have skill and can earn a living, they are going to have a bit of a problem,” Dr.Muoria said.
PS Mworia said there are a lot of opportunities like Mkulima Majuu where young people have been working in the UK and come back to the country with a lot of earnings and experience.
She said by September young people will also receive loans to be able to fund their education and later pay when they are employed.
Chief of Staff in Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s office Gideon Kimathi echoed sentiments by the PS.
Kimathi said that youths should take advantage of the government initiative in order to be able to be skilled instead of being used to cause chaos in the electioneering period.
