Security officers in Central Imenti Sub County have arrested four illegal immigrants working in a bakery following a tip off from the public.
However, some workers managed to escape the police dragnet and the security officers have already launched a manhunt for the suspects and the owner of the bakery.
A woman,45, from the locality is among those who have been nabbed.
The early Friday morning operation was led by a multi-agency team which raided in the dead of the night.
The raid at the illegal bakery operating at Kiria location, was led by Central Imenti Sub County Criminal Investigations (SCCIO) Dr Margaret Owino.
The operation involved the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), public health and other agencies who were acting following a tip-off by members of the public.
“The police acted on a tip-off that there were illegal immigrants at a place in the area. During the operation we found them working at a bakery,” said a source.
The security team arrived at the area in Abothoguchi Central in the dead of the night and though they managed to nab five employees at the bakery, others managed to escape.
“Efforts are ongoing to trace and apprehend the owner of the bakery as well as the escaped employees,” a source said.
One of the arrested is a local, a woman aged 45.
The others in police custody at Kariene Police Station were three Rwandese men aged 23 and 29 and a Burundian aged 22.
The raid took the workers who were baking various types of loaves of bread, bread rolls and other products.
Huge earthen kilns and baking chambers occupied one end of a huge iron-made that served as the factory, while various already packaged bread and other products were stored in another section, ready for distribution.
Several motorcycles, with crates mounted, were inside and outside the building.
An inspection of the facility revealed the extremely unhygienic conditions of the processing, with dirty oil in huge pans, and flies hovering around.
Eggs, fats, baking pans and oil were among the items found in the bakery, located about 600 metres off the Meru-Nkubu road.
Police took away various exhibits, together with the workers, as they launched a manhunt for the owner, also said to be a foreigner.
Sources said bread, cakes and some confectionaries from the bakery are usually sold at local trading centres including Kariene, Equator, Gikumene, Gitimbine ,Meru town , Makutano and Nkubu.
