The Defence Forces Old Comrades Association (DEFOCA) has honoured two of Kenya’s oldest World War II veterans during a medal ceremony at Kariene in central Imenti Meru county
Private (Rtd) Mathengi Ngwiyo, 104, and Private (Rtd) Shadrack Twaraja M’ Twamwari, 102, were decorated for their service in the King’s African Rifles during the Burma campaign in the 1940s.
Brigadier Dixon Chivatsi, DEFOCA Managing Director, said the medals “are not only a token of gratitude but a reminder of the bravery and sacrifice demanded in war.”

He also thanked partners who helped trace the veterans and source the awards abroad, noting the process was “time-consuming but deeply meaningful.”
UK Defence Advisor Brigadier Olly Bryant added: “Given the age of the remaining veterans, every medal issued represents a lifetime of service. We honour these men for their courage and determination which secured peace for generations.”
The ceremony was attended by Meru County officials, senior military officers, retired KDF members, and their families as well.
