Meru Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia has vowed to lobby for partners to enhance cancer treatment at Meru Level 5 hospital and ease the burden of patients.

Mutuma said his administration is in talks with the National Cancer Institute of Kenya for establishment of a cancer diagnosis and treatment research center in Meru.

He said his administration is also pursuing private and public partnerships to reduce the high prevalence of cancer in Meru.

“There were plans to establish cancer research institute at a cost of Sh2billion by former regime which did not materialize. We will pursue this project.”

“Due to the burden of cancer treatment, Meru residents need to register for SHA health care program to reduce pain of using their only resources and take full benefits,” he said.

Mutuma pledged to stop the standoff between Meru Government and medics that often leads to strikes.

The governor said he was keen to address health workers promotions, an end to salary delays, employment of more staff poor remuneration, delayed remittance of statutory deductions among other grievances.

Denis Mugambi, the upper Eastern region KMPDU chairman, said they have had lengthy discussions with the governor aimed at addressing labour and work environment issues.

“There is no more going to the streets but we will conduct indoor meetings amicably,” Dr Mugambi said.

Mutuma has also promised to elevate the Meru Level 5 Hospital to a Level six hospital once enough resources are channeled to the county government.

“Health workers welfare is my number one agenda for effective service delivery. I am aware the challenges you go through but I implore the unionists to embrace consultation before going to the streets. You have a listening and caring governor,” Mutuma said when he toured the hospital.

The County boss said by end of this year, the county will have completed a new Ward block to reduce congestion.

Meru Level 5 hospital board chairman Dr Jotham Micheni said they aim to complement other national referral hospitals in terms of service delivery.

“We have been preparing to reach level six and the board and management feel we are ready. Appeal to all in Meru and region towards developing centers of excellence,” Dr Micheni said.
