Argentina’s hopes of winning the second world cup trophy in a row were dimmed after Spain scored in the first extra time to win 1-0.

Argentina were chasing shadows at MetLife stadium in the game that saw Lionel Messi dimmed.

Spain had more ball possessed than Argentina and had more shots on target with Argentina failing to register even a single shot on target.

Overall, Spain had 20 shots with 11 on target while Argentina registered only three shots with zero on target.

Spain’s also had 68 percent ball possession while Argentina had 32 percent.

Spain also had 803 passes with 90 percent accuracy while Argentina had 445 passes with 78 percent accuracy.

Despite Spain’s dominance, they failed to find a goal in regular 90 minutes and had to wait until extra time after Argentina Keeper Eniliano Martinez made save after save.

Yamine Yamal had two clear chances denied by Martinez in first half.

However Argentina were unlucky as Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez was sent off in the (90+3) minute after receiving a second yellow card.

Spain were able to utilize the one man advantage and scored through substitute Ferran Torres who scored the lone goal in the second extra time (107)

Messi glorious career at the world cup ended with a heartbreak and at the age of 39 it would almost be impossible to play another world cup.

Just imagine that Argentina had to wait until 117th minute to register an attempt on goal that did not materialise.

Their hope to cling on and wait for a penalty shootout were dimmed by Ferran Torres goal and they failed to respond with a goal.
