The newly posted Media Council of Kenya (MCK) and Mount Kenya East Regional coordinator Jacob Nyongesa held his inaugural meeting with the Meru Press Club (MPC) leadership where they unanimously agreed to chat the way forward.

Speaking during a presser after a meeting in the Meru town office headquarters, Nyongesa said in partnership with the MPC leadership, they explored ways of working harmoniously with the media in a bid to ensure each attain their target.

He emphasized that priority will be given to training journalists on election coverage, fact checking, media welfare, safety and protection of journalist especially during and after elections.

“Today we held our inaugural meeting with the MPC leadership and promised to ensure whatever we discuss here is implemented in the future.

We discussed areas of partnership and explored training for journalists especially on election coverage, facts checking, welfare, safety and protection for the media. This will make MPC better by ensuring a more conducive working environment,” said the Regional Coordinator.

Nyongesa said the Mount Kenya East region comprises of 10 counties including Meru, Central and parts of North Eastern regions.

He acknowledged that MPC leadership promised to uphold professionalism during and after the next election.

“The Chairman is committed to uphold professionalism especially during the next election. He has also agreed that the media will be able to do it work without unnecessary interruption,” said Nyongesa.

He added:

“I laud the MPC leadership for the initiative.
It was a pleasure meeting them, evaluating their issues and charting the way forward.”

The coordinator promised to spearhead the accreditation of journalists following the influx of digital content producers.

He said such a move will enable the media do it work apart from getting a practicing license.
