Nominated MP Dorothy Muthoni has raised concern over the alarming rise in teenage pregnancies in Meru County.
Consequently she has urged parents to take a more proactive role in guiding and monitoring their children in order to prevent them from falling into such situations.
The MP said proper parental care and communication are key in shaping the moral behavior and future of young people and urged the parents to take the challenge especially during this school holiday.
Speaking to the media, Muthoni expressed disappointment after learning that over 17 young girls were sitting for their KPSEA exams while in maternity.
“The situation is heartbreaking and a shame to the community because such cases reflect negatively on the image of Meru County. I challenge parents, teachers, and local leaders to take collective action in a bid to address the issue,” said MP Muthoni.
Muthoni also appealed to young boys to play a role in protecting their female peers and siblings.
“Boys should view girls as future wives and mothers who deserve respect and support rather than exploitation. Creating a culture of responsibility among boys would help reduce cases of early pregnancies and promote moral discipline,” emphasized the MP.
Additionally, Muthoni cautioned men against preying on schoolgirls, urging them to let the girls remain in school and pursue their dreams.
She said education is the greatest empowerment for young women and should not be cut short by early pregnancies.
