Meru Woman Representative Elizabeth Karambu Kailemia has called on the Meru community to take a firm stand against the rising cases of teen pregnancy, particularly in Igembe region.
Speaking during an empowerment forum attended by the majority of Meru Members of Parliament, Kailemia said the issue of teen pregnancy among young girls had reached alarming levels and require urgent community intervention.
“We cannot sit back and watch our young girls lose their future to early pregnancies. It is time for all of us parents, leaders, and the community to take responsibility and protect our children,” said Kailemia.
The Woman Representative also termed Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) as an outdated practice that has no place in modern society.
“FGM is an outdated practice that violates the rights of our girls. We must continue to speak against it and ensure it comes to an end,” she emphasized.

Addressing the recent tragedy in which three people lost their lives after consuming illicit brew in the area, Kailemia urged residents to avoid illicit alcohol and instead focus on productive activities that promote development.
She called on the people of Meru to support the current government, saying such cooperation would bring more development projects to the region.
“Let us stand with the government so that Meru can benefit from more development initiatives,” she said.

On his part, Gideon Kimathi, who is in charge of protocol in the Deputy President’s office, commended the people of Meru for their continued support and reminded them that they are privileged to have the Deputy President hailing from Meru Community.
“Meru people are lucky to have the Deputy President coming from this region. We have every reason to support the government and work together for progress,” said Kimathi.
