A Meru schoolgirl forced to abandon her education to care for her sick mother has returned to school after receiving support from Woman Representative Karambu Kailemia.
Hope Kathomi’s plight was cut short due to lack of school fees but Kailemia has secured her education and medical treatment for her mother and relocating the family to a better home.
The Woman Representative said she established that Hope came from a single-parent family living in extreme poverty, with her mother, only named as Damaris, battling illness while the teenager had taken up the responsibility of caring for her family instead of attending school.
Following the intervention, Kailemia committed to fully sponsoring Hope’s education, enabling her to resume her studies without the burden of school fees.
The family, which had been living in deplorable conditions, was also relocated to a safer and more decent house.
“A few weeks ago, I received a call about Hope’s situation. Her story touched my heart and I felt compelled to act. Every child deserves an education, every mother deserves dignity and every family deserves hope,” Kailemia said.
She said the intervention underscored the importance of leadership that delivers tangible support to vulnerable members of society.
Kailemia appealed to leaders, institutions and well-wishers to support needy families, saying timely interventions could restore hope and ensure children from disadvantaged backgrounds remain in school.
