Meru County Alcoholics Drinks Control Board CEO Gitonga Akubu has said they will not license any bar located near a learning institution.

The CEO revealed that their licensing enforcement team has already attained 83 percent compliance.

He said that they will not give licences to bar owners near schools.

“We will not licence any bar or any alcoholic drinks that are not beyond the required 300 metres and above. We will not accept a bar that is 200 or 100 metres from any learning institution,” Akubu said.

Speaking at his office in Meru town, the CEO challenged all distributors to ensure that they display certificates by the Meru County Alcoholics Control Board in their premises.

“We are also doing a lot of civic education to enable the bar attendants or any other person selling alcohol to issue receipts of the type of drink they are selling. The civic education is done to ensure compliance,” Akubu emphasized.

He said receipting will help trace and arrest operators selling counterfeit and illicit alcoholic beverages.

“Maybe we might be having people manufacturing alcohol in Meru while we are not aware of it,” Akubu said.

He said they are also securing their county border entry points to ensure illicit alcohol is not smuggled in the county.

“We have a checkpoint with county enforcement officers to ensure things like Keeria,Katheri on the Laikipia border and Mitunguu and Isiolo,” Akubu said.

He urged residents to give tips to their officers and national government administration officers to enable them wipe out illicit brews that are made in people’s houses.
