The Meru County government is engaging Athletics Kenya (AK) in a bid to revitalize and strengthen athletics in the region.
Through the County Sports, Youth affairs, Gender and Social Development department and AK Eastern region office, long-standing challenges affecting the field are expected to be addressed.
During a consultative meeting between the two offices led by the Meru Sports CEC Elias Murega, various initiatives aimed at nurturing young athletes were resolved.
“We have resolved to reintroduce athletics programs in school, enhance interschool competitions, and establish talent identification and mentorship pathways” said Murega.
The initiative also focuses on laying a strong foundation at the grassroot level for the sport across the region.
“We need a commitment to build a structured and sustainable talent development agenda. Athletics is a powerful tool for youth empowerment and socioeconomic advancement” said Embu AK chair Steven Njeru.
Also in attendance were, the Treasurer AK Meru County and Eastern region Silas Mutia, Vice Chairperson AK Embu Eufrend Nyaga, Chairperson AK Imenti South Stanley Gatobu, Chairperson AK Buuri Lenny Mburugu, Chairperson AK Imenti North Patrick Mwirigi and the Meru Ag. Director of Youth Affairs and Sports Martin Gitonga.
