Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has reaffirmed that the government’s is commitment to uplifting women small-scale traders by offering financial grants and construction of modern Markets across the country.
Addressing over 5000 women at his Irunduni home in Tharaka Nithi County, the DP said the government’s ongoing economic empowerment initiatives are part of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) a plan he said places ordinary Kenyans at the center of national development.
“The economy of this country is vibrant because of the tireless efforts of those at the bottom We will not underestimate the power of women in transforming the country’s fortunes. Women-led nano, micro, and small businesses tiny as they may appear are the foundation of strong economic transformation and the creation of a prosperous, inclusive nation.” lamented Kindiki.
400 Modern Markets Underway
He noted that the government’s economic revival efforts is on the front line targeting construction of about 400 modern markets which are currently on going across the country.
The former Interior cabinet secretary noted the facilities are meant to provide dignified, secure, and hygienic working environments for millions of traders, most of whom are women.
Meru County has been allocated 21 new markets, with the flagship project being the Gakoromone Market in Meru Town, a Sh800 million investment that will be the largest of its kind in the country.
“These markets are not just buildings but they are symbols of dignity, opportunity, and progress. We are creating spaces where our women can trade safely, expand their businesses, and support their families.” he said.
Group Funding and Enterprise Support
He at the same time added on physical infrastructure, the government is rolling out a broad range of empowerment programs aimed at boosting Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
The Deputy President encouraged the women of Meru and other counties to form and register groups to ease access to government funding.
“Other nations have progressed by empowering small and medium enterprises, especially those run by organized groups It is the best way to consolidate national growth, build wealth at the grassroots, and reduce inequality.” said the second in command .
He further highlighted that access to grants and low-interest loans has already transformed thousands of businesses and urged more women to tap into the available resources.
Universal Health Coverage for All
DP Kindiki also urged women to register for the new Social Health Authority (SHA) medical cover, which aims to ensure all Kenyans can access quality healthcare regardless of income.
“We want every Kenyan to have medical cover, whether they earn a salary or not because all registered, individuals will go through a means-testing system to determine what they can afford. Those who can’t pay don’t worry. The government will cover you.”he noted.
The DP noted the move is part of a broader push to reduce the financial burden of healthcare on low-income families.
The Deputy President also took time to highlight ongoing development projects in Meru County, assuring residents that the region remains a key beneficiary of the government’s broader agenda.
Among the major projects is the elevation of Meru Level 5 Hospital to Level 6, promising enhanced healthcare services for the region.
Additionally, the reconstruction of the Nithi Bridge, a critical connection point in the region’s transport network, is set to begin soon, following the allocation of Sh1 billion for the project.
“As I push for national development, I have not forgotten Meru County I will not let you down. I will work hard to ensure we deliver all the promises we made because we will come back to you for support in the coming elections.” he lamented .
