At least 207 cattle have been distributed to livestock farmers in Igembe North Sub-County after they lost their animals to cattle rustling and bandit attacks under a National Government livestock restocking programme aimed at restoring livelihoods in the insecurity-prone region.
The exercise, being coordinated by Igembe North MP Julius Taitumu in collaboration with Igembe North Sub-County Police Commander Jerald Marando, is expected to benefit more families, with an additional 800 cattle scheduled for distribution over the next three days.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, Marando urged residents to remain vigilant and report cases of cattle rustling, banditry and other security threats without delay to enable security agencies to respond promptly and pursue those responsible.
He said timely reporting would enhance the protection of residents and their livestock while strengthening ongoing security operations in the area.
Taitumu said the restocking programme reflects the National Government’s commitment to helping families recover from losses caused by insecurity and rebuild their livelihoods through livestock farming.
He called on residents to cooperate with security agencies, support government efforts to combat banditry and embrace development programmes aimed at improving household incomes.
The leaders expressed confidence that the programme would restore hope to affected families and accelerate economic recovery in one of Meru County’s most banditry-affected areas.
