In a powerful demonstration of the government’s renewed focus on regional equity, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki delivered a strong message of inclusion and development to the residents of Samburu County during a tour that saw him commission key projects and outline future infrastructural plans.

Speaking during the commissioning of the new Maralal Municipality Market in Samburu West, Kindiki emphasized that every corner of the country, including marginalized, would benefit equally from national development initiatives.

“My work is to assist the President to deliver development to the people of Kenya, and I will ensure Samburu is not left behind,” said Kindiki, drawing cheers from the gathered residents.

The Sh73 million market co-funded by the national and county governments with the county contributing Sh23 million, is one of over 400 modern markets being constructed nationwide.

He noted the projects aim at uplifting small-scale traders, particularly mama mboga by offering them dignified, secure, and well-equipped trading spaces.

“Our traders now have decent places to work We promised modern, inclusive markets, and we are delivering with cold rooms, lactation spaces, children’s play areas, and free ICT hubs for our youth.” said the DP.

Kindiki at the same time also inspected the nearly completed Yamo Dam costing ksh 2.2billion investment set to store 1.5 billion litres of water set to benefit Maralal and its surroundings with a consistent water supply.

The final step, he said, was piping the water from the dam to households a task expected to be completed within a year.

“The dam is ready. What remains is the piping. Once done, residents will no longer rely on seasonal water because we have already secured permanent solution,” Kindiki asserted.

The Deputy President announced that funds have already been allocated for the long awaited tarmacking of the Maralal-Baragoi road.

He said the project, once completed, will enhance trade and improve security access in the volatile region.

Speaking of security, Kindiki did not mince words on the government’s crackdown on banditry, which has long plagued parts of Samburu.

“Peace is non-negotiable. We will not sleep pretty until peace and security is fully restored in Samburu ,”he said.

To support sustainable development the second in command also addressed the need for reliable electricity in the region.

He noted that the government is expediting the completion of the Rumuruti Power Sub-station to stabilize Maralal’s power supply and end recurrent outages that have hampered business and development.

The Deputy President’s visit marked a broader attempt of inclusive development that many in remote counties have longed for.
