Meru university of science and Technology (MUST) graduands have been urged to use their skills and knowledge acquired to help the government fight development challenges in a bid to create more employment opportunities .
Addressing students through his speech cabinet secretary Ezekiel Machogu who was represented by Rosalida Owuor director Research Development, said youths are the pillar for economic growth as the government is commitment to enhancing access to education for all.
He further noted the government is committed to assure equity to access to higher education in the country by funding all students joining higher education institutions.
“The current university funding model was implemented unfortunately, there has been some misunderstanding regarding how this funding arrangement operates. This funding model does not increase fees, but instead provides university funding through government scholarships, student loans, and household contributions to ensure every child access higher learning without much struggle so I urge all first-year students who have not yet reported to their respective universities to do so as soon as possible since the government is funding all students,” said CS in his speech.
The CS added students should be prepared to utilize their skills and knowledge to make positive contribution as the government continue to fight unemployment in the country
“ As graduates of a Science and Technology University, I am certain that the critical thinking abilities you have developed will help you to solve our most urge development challenges creatively and communicate effectively. Kenya and indeed the rest of the world is in dire need of leaders, thinkers and change makers. Your academic achievement should demonstrate the power of education and the unlimited potential it unlocks for humanity in line with the graduation theme “Beyond the Horizon: harnessing technology and innovations for infinite possibilities”. Mazogu said in his speech.
Also addressing 1350 graduands during the 11 graduation ceremony on Friday the vice Chancellor Prof Romanus Odhiambo urged the graduands to use their skills acquired in the university to mark their commitment to the Bottom-Up Economic Agenda, Vision 2030, and the Sustainable Development Goals,
“I urge you to use your education to not only uplift yourselves but also your communities and the nation at large. Be agents of positive change, embodying the ideals of service, social responsibility, and sustainability as the county gear towards vision 2030 It is a testament to your commitment to excellence and the values that we hold here of Competitiveness, Integrity, Professionalism, Quality and Innovation,” said Romanus.
Speaking Prof Jane Wangui council chair also reminded the students that are country is faced with the challenges of unemployment and urged them to venture into technology to create employment for themselves .
“ A few years ago, there were more job opportunities than there are now. Several of you know of unemployed graduates in your homes, villages and estates. Do not add to their number. You are living at a time when creativity and innovation are rewarded just look at what is happening on YouTube, Tiktok and other platforms just think What can you do with these chances you have to create jobs,” said
At the same time the VC lauded county Government of Meru for their continued support for the pursuit of academic excellence and their mission to provide quality university education, training, and research in science, technology innovation.
