One suspect was arrested and 140 litres of illicit liquor impounded in a multi agency operation at Timau in Buuri West.

The suspect was arrested on Friday morning while preparing the liquor for distribution in Timau town.

Buuri West Sub County Police Commander James Musyimi said the operation involving National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) and the police was inspired by a tip off from intelligence.

He noted that during the operation, 29 cartons of Trace vodka with 20 pieces each were seized.

“We received intelligence that there was a member of public transporting the illicit liquor we are fighting. The brand is suspected not to have met the Kenya Bureau of Standards and Kenya Revenue Authority standards,” said the Police boss.

Musyimi added that the suspect, Martin Mukundi Mati, who he described as notorious, has been supplying the liquor in the area.

“The suspect has been entering the streets of Timau town secretly supplying the liquor. We have information that he has also been involved in an ongoing case in Naru Moru where he was arrested in February with the same brand and several other brands. He is out on bond,” said Musyimi.

The DCI officers from the region have taken up the matter to identify the origin of the liquor.

The suspect awaiting to be arraigned in court.

Musyimi further said that the officers are committed to weed out the vice from the area as directed by the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

He appealed to the public to work with NGAO officers to win the fight against illicit brew.

“This kind of business will kill the economic growth of genuine business people in the area. We will not relent in this fight so that we ensure our people consume what is acceptable and safe,” he said.
