A split has emerged in Njuri Ncheke Council of elders after a faction vowed to proceed with mediation talks to unite Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza and MCAs as directed by the high court.

This comes days after the Njuri Ncheke leadership turned down a directive by Justice Linus Kassan to lead mediation talks to forestall the impeachment of governor Kawira Mwangaza

The elders who spoke at their headquarters Nchiru Shrine in Tigania West, Meru said they called on MCAs to withdraw the notice of impeachment motion that is before the assembly as they initiate dialogue.

Led by Andriano Aruyaru, the elders also disowned their Chairman Linus Kathera, Secretary general Josphat Murangiri and Washington Muthamia.

Aruyaru thanked Linus Kassan for recognizing that Njuri elders are capable of handling the impeachment case for peace and development in Meru.

“We request MCAs to withdraw the fifth impeachment motion, stop their infighting and unite for development and peace. Since Devolution started I have never heard any other Governor who has been impeached five times,” he said.

Aruyaru said elders had to kill a sheep and a Bull to cleanse Nchiru Shrine from alleged illegal ‘oathing activities’ conducted there on October 14, 2023.

Last year, Njuri Ncheke was on the spot for allegedly administering an oath to MCAs before the third impeachment motion and giving their blessings to deputy governor Isaac Mutuma.

Aruyaru hailed the President William Ruto who urged the leadership of Njuri Ncheke to resolve the divisions in Meru.

“This County has been in turmoil. We are heartbroken by the decision by the secretary General to say that Njuri Ncheke had no authority to resolve the differences. We have powers and there is no case difficult for Njuri to tackle,” Aruyaru said.

He said they have now disowned their leadership and the top leaders were not allowed to enter the Nchiru shrine.

“We will meet the MCAs and the governor to know what is ailing the county government. We appeal to them to listen to Njuri Ncheke. Murangiri and his team have put the revered elders into disrepute,” Aruyaro said.

Nominated MCA Zipporah Kinya on Wednesday tabled the fifth notice of motion for the impeachment of Meru governor citing abuse of office, gross misconduct and gross violation of the constitution.
