Residents of Tharaka Nithi county who are registered under the Social Health Insurance Scheme are set to receive free healthcare services at all primary care facilities in the area including dispensaries and health centers.
Tharaka Nithi governor and chairperson of the Council of Governors’ Health Committee Muthomi Njuki while announcing the initiative said that all residents have the right to quality and affordable healthcare without incurring costs at the county facilities.
He said the move aims to encourage more people to enroll in the Social Health Authority program.
However, the governor clarified that those requiring admission will need to be fully registered members.

“All the residents of Tharaka Nithi county who are already registered under the Social Health Insurance Scheme will be receiving free healthcare services at all primary care facilities in the area including dispensaries and health centers. Outpatient services at level 3 facilities will be free for registered residents while inpatient services will still require payment. Those requiring admission will need to be fully registered members in order to benefit from the free services,” said governor Njuki.
He said the county is also working to increase the percentage of registered residents under the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) from the current 27%.
