Residents of Amwathi location in Igembe South constituency have raised an alarm over the rising cases of insecurity in the area with many living in fear.
They said the dire circumstances of the issue was recently raised when President William Ruto toured Meru county.
During the tour Governor Isaac Mutuma M’Ethingia requested for presidential intervention in a bid to help solve the long standing issue of insecurity.
However, they expressed disappointment that the situation has persisted, with a recent attack by bandits on the night of Wednesday, 23rd April 2025, leaving them terrified and tense.
A resident, Kiroria, lamented that the insecurity has plagued the area for decades.
He narrated how cattle belonging to a local named Mugambi were stolen during the latest attack.
“I was in the area when three people, two of them armed, arrived. They took eleven cows after snatching Mugambi’s phone and then walked away. These bandit attacks are rampant. We are asking the relevant authorities to take the necessary action,” Kiroria said.
Another resident, Joshua Mwenda, blamed the authorities for being reluctant in dealing with the matter.
“The government needs to take this seriously. We’ve witnessed several attacks where not only animals are stolen, but lives have also been lost,” said Mwenda.
The residents are now calling for urgent and serious government operations meant to restore peace and ensure their safety.
