Former Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi has been ordained as the Mugwe of the Ameru community, a first in the modern community.

A Mugwe was the spiritual and divine leader in each of the Ameru subtribes and came from a specific clan.

However, in departure from the old norms, Prof Kaimenyi, a dentist by training, was declared the Mugwe of the Ameru.

Prof Kaimenyi was designated the senior cultural title during the launch of the Ammiiru Community Association Stakeholders Association (ACCSA) on Saturday.

ACCSA is a cultural outfit aimed at inclusivity and bring the people of Meru and Tharaka Nithi Counties together.

The event was also graced by cultural leaders from the Pokomo and Luo communities.

Prof Kaimenyi said ACCSA is inclusive of all genders, the youths and people living with disabilities from the two counties, an involvement that lacks in other cultural groups.

“I will support and serve you with humility. I want to challenge young people to love their culture and the Ameru diet. Let’s be proud of who we are. Ameru people were known for their courage and honesty,” Kaimenyi said.

Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki said without enrichment of Ameru culture, the community will lose identity.

“Njuri Ncheke is for men only but ACCSA has an inclusion of everyone both men and women. We are two counties but one people, no one should separate us for their own political interests,” Njuki said.

Njuki also told off former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua accusing him of playing divide and rule politics in Mt. Kenya region.

He said leaders should now focus on development and avoid the rush to establish political parties.

“There is a time we came up with a political party six months to the election, and it went ahead to win key positions, including members of parliament. Where is the hurry now?” Njuki quipped.

Njuki said Gachagua is undermining the government and working extra hard to isolate the people of Mt Kenya from development.
