President William Ruto has lauded the police for the effort to suppress anti-government demonstrations that resumed on Wednesday and expected to end Friday.
Speaking at Ruiri in Meru while launching the Ruiri-Isiolo road, which has been re-carpeted, President Ruto said the government will go hard against the opposition leaders to quell demonstrations.
“We have been hard on Raila odinga since yesterday and we will continue doing so. I want to thank Kenyans for rejecting violence and destruction of property. As a democracy we are peaceful and want to build our economy,” the president said.
President Ruto added that “it is foolish to burn a tarmac road we have spent so much money to build”
The president vowed to use all means to ‘bring an end to the demonstrations in this country.’
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua hit out at PNU party leader Peter Munya accusing him of attempting to stoke anti-government voices in the region.
“We have advised Peter Munya not to bring demonstrations in Meru. He destroyed the coffee sector and even listed himself as a director of KPCU alongside Ukur Yattani. However, we have removed him and restored KPCU to farmers,” Rigathi said.
He added, “We will not allow Munya to continue destroying property in Mt Kenya because our people are hard working.”
The president was accompanied by Meru leaders including governor Kawira Mwangaza, Senator Kathuri Murungi, MPs Karambu Kalemia, Dan Kiili, Rahim Dawood, Shadrack Mwiti, Mugambi Rindikiri, Julius Taitumu and Moses Kirima.
Rindikiri dared Munya to step into Buuri constituency saying ‘he is not the only warrior (Laing’o) in Meru.
“We were waiting for them and had vowed that if we arrest those men, they won’t be able to sire children again,” North Imenti MP Rahim Dawood said.
