Parents of Ruiri Rwarera primary school in Buuri, Meru County, have held demonstration demanding for the immediate transfer of the head teacher accusing him of alleged excessive alcoholism.
They claimed the excessive consumption of alcohol has disrupted learning at the institution leading to decline in academic performance and low enrollment at the institution.
Led by Faith Kagendo, one of the concerned parents, the agitated parents appealed to the Ministry of Education to transfer the head teacher, Baraka Khuno, citing a complete loss of confidence in him.
Kagendo claimed that the headteacher’s behavior has forced some parents to withdraw their children from the school, leading to a significant drop in student enrollment.
“Our children’s education is at risk. We urge the ministry to act swiftly and post a new head teacher here. Many parents have already moved their children to other schools because of this issue,” Kagendo said.
Dickson Kimathi, another parent, echoed the same sentiments, insisting that the community has lost trust in Khuno and that urgent action is needed to restore order at the school.
Efforts by the Voice Daily to get comments from the school administration or the education officials were futile as they declined to speak or comment on the same.
The protest prompted education officials from Buuri Sub-County to intervene and hold a meeting with both the aggrieved parents and the embattled head teacher in an attempt to resolve the standoff.
Such cases have increasingly become common in parts of the country, with the Ministry of Education reportedly drafting plans to offer counseling and rehabilitation support for teachers struggling with alcoholism.
