Residents who reside in venerable areas prone to floods and landslides within Meru County have been advised to be on high alert during this rainy season in order to avoid loss of life or property.
Director of Special Programs in Meru County, Lenah Nkirote Kiambi, urged residents living in both the lowlands and highlands to remain vigilant during the ongoing heavy rains.
She noted that the county has been experiencing intense rainfall, which poses risks of floods and landslides, especially in vulnerable areas.
Kiambi emphasized the importance of early preparedness to prevent loss of lives and property.
“Am calling on residents in landslide-prone regions to stay alert and report any signs of soil movement or cracks to local authorities for timely intervention. I also encourage community leaders to sensitize locals on disaster preparedness and to identify safe evacuation areas in case of emergencies,” said Ms Kiambi.
At the same time, Kiambi cautioned motorists to exercise extra care while using the roads during this rainy season.
“Poor visibility and slippery surfaces increase the risk of accidents. I urge drivers to reduce speed and avoid reckless driving. I advise the public transport operators to prioritize the safety of passengers at all times,” she said.

In addition, Ms Kiambi appealed to parents to take good care of their children during the long school holidays.
She reminded them to keep their children engaged in positive activities and to monitor their movements in order to prevent cases of indiscipline or early pregnancies.
She reaffirmed the county government’s commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of residents through public awareness and disaster preparedness initiatives.
Ms Kiambi said collaboration between citizens and authorities is key to reducing the impact of natural disasters and safeguarding the lives of Meru residents.
