In a bid to nurture and promote sporting talent, the Meru County government has established a Sports Council tasked with spearheading sporting programmes.

The move is set to transform Meru into a hub of sporting excellence, providing a platform for sportsmen and sportswomen to shine and represent the county with pride.

The council, a diverse and dynamic team of 19 members, is chaired by Brian Mutembei.

Its members include Peter Kiraithe, Douglas Wakihuri, Muchena Nathan, Nicholus Mugambi, Yagnik Ramji,Anthony Muriuki, Lynette Kinoti, Marya Wachira, Terry Gachai and Job Thuranira.

Others to complete the team include Florence Karambu, David Muriira, Kinoti Mwenda, Lilian Kathambi, Nicholas Nyaga, Purity Nkirote, Wincet Kagwiria and Maore Kabuchia.

Speaking during an engagement session with the Council, Meru governor Mutuma M’Ethingia said that, “Their collective expertise and passion for sports position Meru for a vibrant and transformative future in the sector”.

The Meru Sports Council is mandated to advise the County Executive Committee Member responsible for sports on matters relating to the development, promotion and coordination of both amateur and professional sports across the county.

The council is also expected to be involved, in creation of strategic linkages, attracting private sector investment and developing an annual sports calendar to enhance youth engagement and promote community development.

Governor Mutuma also urged the council to ensure cohesion amongst sports organisations.

“In your service, we expect you to play a vital role in strengthening cohesion among sports organizations, promoting inclusivity, supporting policy development aligned with national and international standards and advocating for equitable sports infrastructure”, he said.

“We trust that you will work towards attracting high-profile events, promote athlete welfare, contribute to commercial strategies and serve as a bridge between stakeholders at all levels to build a strong and sustainable sports sector in Meru” governor Mutuma told the council.

Sports executive Elias Murega challenged the team to work hard in uplifting sporting activities in the county.
