The newly elected officials of FKF Meru Branch have promised to reduce the cost of running football in the region.
Benson Gitonga Kanyuru “Pele” who took over from Ken Rungu as the chairman said many clubs are community entities and thus find it hard to raise funds.
“Many teams are suffering over high expenses considering most of them are community clubs. As delegates, we will focus on zoning so as to reduce the cost of running football and sustain the plans of our predecessors,” said Kanyuru.
Similar sentiments were shared by the newly elected Vice Chairman Elias Murega, who also reassured football lovers of restoring the soccer lost glory in the County.
“We will be looking forward to seeing that all sub counties are active, and this will be possible through zoning that will help in cost cutting” said the vice chairman.
He however called on the sponsors and especially the local investors, to continue with their support in order to nurture more talents from the grassroots level.
Jediel Gitonga Ntika was elected the Treasurer having served as the former chair FKF Igembe Central and as secretary Meru North sub ranch.
Gitonga brings in a wealth of experience in the team that has been elected, hoping that most of the teams in the county will double.
“We had to share only 21 votes that translates to 21 teams both from division 2, regional and County leagues which are very few teams. We will do zoning to reduce cost so that more teams can participate,” said Gitonga
He added that, “Having been at the grassroots most of the time that I have served in the leadership, it is evident that there is a lot of talent in Meru county. Very soon, we shall tap the talent and put this game to the next level before our four year period ends”.
Elizabeth Kananu who was elected the women representative, expressed commitment to ensure more girls join the game.
“It is my prayer and wish that we recruit and have more girls joining us in football. This will not only nurture talents but also protect them as they are prone to many bad issues in the society among them early pregnancy, drug abuse and early marriages” she said.
On his part, Collins Gakaria Murithi who was elected the youth representative of the branch said that he will stir the initiative to uplift the youth leagues in the County.
“Through the establishment of academies, at least half of the senior teams we have in Meru county that will oversee us curbing drug abuse to the boychild. It will also be a platform of exposure to soccer and we believe we will qualify for the top leagues” said Collins.
