The eastern region politics have taken a new twist after MPs from Meru, Tharaka Nithi and Embu endorsed Interior CS Kithure Kindiki as the region’s spokesman on matters development.

Addressing journalists in Embu, the legislators said Prof Kindiki was well suited to be the link between the MPs and the cabinet.

In a press statement read by Mbeere North MP Geoffrey Ruku, the MPs said the Mt Kenya East parliamentary caucus would unanimously champion the social economic and political agenda of the people.

“We have unanimously agreed that the link between us and the executive is Prof. Kithure Kindiki,” the MPs said.

They said going forward, the region would push for its development from government as a distict unit, separate from Central Kenya.

Previously, there has been hue and cry over Mr Kenya East region being sidelined by Central Kenya after voting as a block in the elections.

“This is the beginning of our effort to push the transformation agenda of Mt Kenya East. We acknowledge the need for a strong linkage with the president to fasttrack the development needs of the region,” Mr Ruku said.

They said they would rally for completion of various roads, water projects and electrification programmes initiated by the previous administration.

“Mt Kenya east has significant voting numbers making us a critical region in shaping the political and development direction of our country. Our collective voice in the national government cannot be assumed,” he said.

They lauded the president for appointing three residents of the region including Prof Kindiki, Justin Muturi and Eric Mugaa to the cabinet.

“We appreciate the president for the opportunities offered to our people and urge the president to give us more,” he said.

Ruku was flanked by MPs Mpuru Abuuri (Tigania East), Elizabeth Kilemia (Woman Rep Meru), John Mutunga (Tigania West), John Paul Mwirigi (Igembe South), Senator Alexander Mudigi (Embu), Bernard Muriuki (Mbeere South), Dan Kiili (Igembe Central), Gitonga Murugara (Tharaka), Julius Taitumu (Igembe North), Patrick Munene (Chuka), Pamela Njoki (Embu Woman Rep), Kareke Mbiuki (Maara) and Mugambi Rindikiri(Buuri).

On Sunday, several MPs from the region hit out at DP Gachagua accusing him of sabotaging the president through a campaign disguised as unity effort.

While several Meru MPs shunned Mr Gachagua’s recent church visit in Imenti South, five MPs on Sunday, accompanied Majority leader Kimani Ichungwah for a church meeting in Tigania West.
