Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma has presented the name of his deputy nominee to the County Assembly days after he made his pick public.

According to the constitution, a governor is supposed to nominate a deputy within 14 days after the office falls vacant.

The Assembly Committee on Appointments is expected to begin the process of vetting Kiome after the Speaker tabled her name to the house on Tuesday.

Mutuma was sworn in as the new Meru County Governor replacing impeached Kawira Mwangaza two weeks ago.

This comes after the impeachment of Mwangaza was upheld by the high court in Nairobi.

In a judgment delivered on March 14, Justice Bahati Mwamuye ruled that the petition challenging Mwangaza’s removal did not meet the legal threshold to overturn the Senate’s decision.

The judge affirmed that Mwangaza was accorded a fair hearing and dismissed her plea to invalidate the gazette notice confirming her removal.

Ms Kiome, a lawyer, joined politics in 2022 when she was appointed Mithika Linturi’s running mate.

She previously, briefly served as acting LSK president after the ouster of Mr Nelson Havi.
