The Meru county government held a strategic meeting with Community Road Empowerment (CORE) in a bid to review the progress of the roads funded the Japan government.
The move is meant to fast-track urban development and improve infrastructure in underserved areas.
Meru County Executive Committee Member for Lands, Physical Planning, Urban Development, Housing, and Public Works, Joy Karwitha and Chief Officer Victor Akwalu held the strategic meeting with CORE to review the progress of the Japan Social Development Fund (JSDF) supported road rehabilitation projects.
The Japan Social Development Fund (JSDF) project is being implemented by CORE in collaboration with the county government of Meru and other stakeholders.
The initiative focuses on improving accessibility and boosting livelihood opportunities in underserved urban neighborhoods.
“So far, the project has successfully rehabilitated 27 kilometers of roads across Mjini, Majengo, and Gitimbine. These upgrades have brought tangible benefits to local communities, including the creation of short-term jobs for both skilled and unskilled labor with a special emphasis on engaging youth and women,” said CECM Karwitha.

Enhanced road access has also stimulated the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), helping to revitalize local economies.
During the meeting, the teams discussed prospective areas for future collaboration to align with and bolster Meru c.ounty’s broader development agenda.
Following the strategic discussions, the officials embarked on a joint field visit to inspect the rehabilitated roads and engage with residents whose lives have been positively transformed by the project.
