The Meru County Assembly members on Wednesday initiated a new warfront with Governor Kawira Mwangaza by kicking off impeachment proceedings against her county executive officers.

Several impeachment motions are lined up on Thursday a day after Igembe East MCA Titus Murithi tabled a notice of motion to impeach health executive Dr George Mungania.

The motion tabled by Murithi has cited several allegations they believe to their grounds enough to remove them from office.

He is accused of among others; gross violation of the constitution, law, abuse of office, gross misconduct and incompetence.

The MCAs who spoke during the afternoon session said the CECs have been demeaning the house and ignoring summons to answer questions asked by the representatives.

“Under the provisions of Section 40 of the County Governments Act, 2012 and Standing order 67, the county assembly resolves to impeach CEC in charge of health of George Mungania. The CECM has violated among others articles 10(2), 41(1), 47, 73 and 232 of leadership and integrity Act 2012.

He has also violated sections 9 and 10 of the public officer ethics Act 2003, section 10 of the Meru County Teaching and Referral Hospital Board Act 2019 by appointing a chief executive officer/director of the facility,” the motion states.

Murithi wants Mungania removed for abuse of office by usurping the powers of the facility’s board of directors in recruitment.

This was done against recruitment procedures provided for under Section 10 of the hospital’s board Act 2019.

Majority leader Patrick Mutuma of Kisima Ward said MCAs had sufficient evidence to impeach the CECMs.

“We did our oversight to the governor successfully and impeached her. The CECMs never attend to summons by MCAs. The law allows us to take action. We have extended time to impeach the rest of the CECs. We must bring back sanity and the glory of Meru,” Mutuma said.

The assembly minority leader Mwenda Ithili (Akithi ) said they will not tire of saving Meru from bad leadership and the governance crisis currently witnessed.

“We have more notices until this county works are functional. We are conducting further investigations,” Ithili said.

Kirima Mubichi of Nyaki West said his people are suffering from lack of drugs and necessary medical attention after misuse of funds by Mungania’s office.

“The CEC has shown great incompetence and corruption. We want to impeach all the County Executive Members,” he said.

Mutungi Thuranira of Amwathi and Julius Kabira mentioned several hospitals they claimed were allocated funds but it was misused.
