The 10th edition of the Kenya Inter-County Sports and Cultural Association (Kicosca) Games kicked off in Meru with leaders saying the event will play a key role in ending tribalism in the country and trigger development through devolution.

Gracing the opening ceremony at Kinoru stadium, West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin said sporting activities will unite the nation and showcase devolution success.

“Through Kicosca, we will be able to embody our values, and reflect the rich diversity of our counties and the Nation,” said Kachapin.

“The theme of this year’s event, Celebrating Devolution Through Sports and Culture holds a profound meaning. Kicosca provides us with a valuable platform to chart our course, share ideas and implement action that will propel us forward,” he added.

Kachapin, who is also the COG Chair of Gender, Youth, Culture, Sports and Social Services committee noted that the county employees will be empowered through such initiatives.

Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza reiterated that the event will promote national unity, sustainable development, security and health in the counties.

“Through sports we encourage young people to explore talents and take advantage of the multi- billion sector” she said, and promised to enhance development of sporting grounds across the county.

“To support the youth, we ask sports Kenya to fast track completion of Kinoru stadium. We shall also be refurbishing other fields in our region,” said Mwangaza.

Nyeri governor Mutahi Kahiga said that devolution won’t be actualized by governors alone but through the engagement of county staff.

“I thank Kicosca for the support they give to our staff. This will enable them to have fun out of their busy office schedules and they will be able to deliver effectively,” the Nyeri governor said.

Kicosca chairman John Angawa called for more opportunities to explore and expand the region where KICOSCA teams will be competing.

“Devolution has brought pesa mashinani. Through Kicosca much will be learnt on diverse devolution development projects. We now need to take the games out of East Africa community” said Angawa.

In the opening match that Meru county soccer team played against Samburu county, Meru made a comeback to beat Samburu 3-1.
