The Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examinations Board (KASNEB) has feted a Karumo Technical Training Institute student the best in East Africa.
Elijah Mumo made the institution proud after he emerged top in management accounting, at ATD level 3, the final level in diploma.
Expressing his joy, Mumo observed that “I was ranked the best candidate in management accounting in the April sitting. KASNEB congratulated me and also invited me for the award ceremony that was held in KCA University. It is a nice feeling to be ranked the best. I didn’t expect it but I knew I had given my best. If you’re committed, anything is possible”.

The student thanked his trainer, Mr Collins Kirimi for helping him achieve his target.
The institution Principal Flora Kanyua applauded the student for the success, attributing the good performance by the learners to good discipline.
“He has made our institution proud. I commend the students for good discipline, and the teachers for their commitment to teach and that is why we see this kind of high pass rate giving us a mean score of 82 percent which is quite high considering the number of candidates,” she said.
Ms Kanyua added that the institution also embraces teamwork, where trainers are able to support each other and assist students to achieve their goals.
The principal also noted that one of their performance contracting targets is scoring at least 76 percent.
“Our trainers work towards achieving the 76 percent target and it is working. We also award certificates to trainers who achieve the target, boosting their morale. We also award departments that do well,” said Kanyua.
She however called on parents to trust the institution with learners, promising to impact them with lifetime skills.
“To the parents, if we can produce the best student, why don’t you trust us with your children. We will mould them and by the time they get out of the institution they will be polished citizens. We trace study and our trainees are doing well in the job market,” she said.
The principal said that they have started income generating activities and several other environment management projects together with the community.
Karumo Technical is among the few institutions that have taken up the challenge to generate own revenue.
Currently, the institution is engaged in farming of dragon fruits, avocados, bee keeping as well as tree planting.

“There is a directive in our performance contracting target where we are supposed to plant 3,250 trees, with every trainer expected to plant 30 trees. As an institution, we approached Tigania West conservator who gave us Kuani hill where we have adopted five acres of which we have planted,” said the Principal.
She added: “We have also fenced two acres of Matiru water catchment area so as to protect the trees planted by the community. We shall ensure that we not only plant but also grow them. Inside our institution we have 1,000 trees and currently the total number is over 9,000 trees,” she said.
