Residents of Rapsu in Isiolo South can now light their homes after Deputy President Kithure Kindiki commissioned last-mile electrification in the marginalised area.
This is the first time the area is having access to electricity since Kenya attained independence.
The Kenya Kwanza administration has allocated more than Sh1.1 billion to power more than 500 households in Isiolo County as well as construction of a power plant to enhance distribution of power in the expansive County.
“Electricification of Isiolo and other marginalized areas in this country is part of the bottom up agenda. the time for work, not empty rhetoric. The last-mile connectivity projects are ensuring that households and businesses finally get access to electricity—an essential service.
In Merti, a KSh335 million green energy power plant is being established, reinforcing the government’s push for sustainable and environmentally conscious development,” the DP said.
He said availability of power will boost agricultural production in areas like Kinna and Rapsu where communities are practising mixed farming and agro-pastoralism.
He said to open up the north eastern region, the government is building the longest tarmac road in the country covering 750 kilometers from Isiolo to Mandera.
The DP pledged Sh150 million to revitalize an irrigation scheme under the Rapsu farmers cooperative.
The deputy president also oversaw the presentation of Sh56 million cheque to compensate families affected by human-wildlife conflict situations.
