The Imenti Development Forum( IDF) has launched an intensive campaign against drug and substance abuse among the youths in the region to help boost education and alleviate poverty.
IDF is an association of professionals and business people from Imenti, who are keen on resolving social economic challenges.
Led by their patron lawyer Mugambi Imanyara and chairman Charles Mbogori together with other officials, the professionals vowed to intensify the campaign claiming many youths have sunk into alcoholism.
They expressed concern over high rate of school and college drop out among bright potential youth.
“Our mission is to save our sub- county and bring back the lost glory of Imenti sub tribe in areas of education, agriculture, business among others without forgeting the key pillars that are social, political and economic status,” said Mr Imanyara.
Mr Imanyara spoke at Ngiine Secondary school where he was accompanied by Vice Chairman Kairu Magambo, Secretary-Brian Mutembei, Vice Secretary – Muthaura Njogu and teasurer- Mwenda Kirera.
The group donated Sh1 million for the establishment of an ICT Centre at Ngiine Day Secondary school, a project that is aimed at serving the institution as well as the neighbouring communities of Ngiine, Kithoka and Munithu in North Imenti constituency.
“Our young people are the most jobless and affected by the third generation alcohol. We must come together and save a generation,” said the IDF patron
Addressing parents students and residents, the team said they have prioritized education after realizing the sector has been deteriorating occasioned by high school drop out and early pregnancies.
“Our schools are performing poorly because our children have turned into alcoholism. We are supporting this ICT centre here to help our youth learn technology skills and earn by doing online jobs,” said Muthaura Njogu.
They lamented that the region is currently receiving very little or no major infrastructure projects due to lack of a common voice to push the government address their needs.
“ In the past regimes, we have been having ministers in government. But for the first time, the Imenti community has been left out in this administration. The government officers from Imenti are being removed without a meaningful reason,” Mbogori said.
The chairman appealed to more professionals to join the association to enhance their lobbying power.
IDF has in the past funded the construction of two other social centres in Imenti South and Imenti Central.
