Daniel Kiogora, a large scale farmer from Kithirune in Central Imenti, Meru County, is promoting the Azolla plant as a significant solution to the escalating costs of animal feed.
Thanks to the Asian aquatic plant, Kiogora has been able to save approximately Ksh 8,000 to Ksh10,000 every month on feed expenses.
Such savings are major relief for farmers grappling with high feed costs across the country.
Azolla, a highly nutritious aquatic plant, has been hailed as a sustainable alternative to traditional livestock feeds.
Research published in the Aquaculture and Journal of Animal Science reveals that Azolla is rich in protein (20-30%), essential amino acids, vitamins (especially B vitamins), and minerals like calcium and phosphorus.
It is also packed with fiber for digestion and is low in fat, making it an ideal, cost-effective feed for various livestock, including poultry, cattle, and fish.

Kiogora, who stumbled upon this Asian-origin plant while searching online for ways to cut down on feed costs, says that the results have been remarkable.
“I can proudly say that the Azolla plant has significantly reduced my feed expenses, and it’s made a big difference to the overall productivity of my farm,” he says.
As one of the early adopters of Azolla farming in the region, Kiogora is now encouraging fellow farmers to consider incorporating the plant into their own agricultural practices.
“This plant has proven to be not just affordable but also profitable. I urge other farmers to join the movement and take advantage of this incredible resource,” he adds.
With rising input costs affecting farmers across Kenya, Kiogora’s success story is a beacon of hope, proving that sustainable farming practices can not only reduce costs but also increase farm productivity.
