Meru county government will on Friday launch a monthly town cleaning drive aimed at improving quality of life in urban centres.

Governor Isaac Mutuma will lead the launch of the drive dubbed Ng’arisha Jiji’ at Gakoromone on Friday, May 30.

The initiative has been supported by various partners including the Municipality Board, Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, traders, private sector among others.

The governor said the initiative is inspired by the need to unclog drainage lines and reduce piling of waste in towns.

“The cleaning drives will be taking place every last Friday of the month in our towns. We want to have clean, green and safe towns,” Governor Mutuma said.

According to a draft Meru town solid waste management policy, Meru Municipality alone generates about 100 tonnes of organic waste per day, with most of it ending up in the Nkunga landfill.

According to the Meru Municipality Board, Meru town hosts about 250,000 residents who generate heaps of waste by the hour.

Speaking during a briefing meeting, Meru Chief of Staff Mwenda Mbijiwe called on traders in the towns to participate in the cleaning drive.

“The cleaning drive is modelled after the Kigali cleaning initiative. We want to end the trend of dirty towns in our county,” Mr Mbijiwe said.

County Health executive Dennis Mugambi said the initiative was noble as it would contribute to a decline in preventable diseases.
