Former Nyaki West MCA Martin Mworia Kiongozi has written to President William Ruto requesting him to halt the planned upgrade of Meru Level Hospital and instead have another facility constructed afresh.
Meru Level Five Hospital is set to be upgraded to a Level Six Hospital after specialists from the Defense Ministry recently visited the facility to access it.
But Kiongozi has recommended the construction of a new hospital, preferably to be located at Gitoro ASK showgrounds.
Kiongozi, who served for five years as Chair of the Sectoral Committee of Health and Medical Services in the Meru County Assembly says there is insufficient land for the upgrade of the hospital.
“Dear Mr. President. I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I am writing to express my concerns regarding the proposed renovation of Meru Level Five Hospital.
Based on my five years as Chair of the Sectoral Committee of Health and Medical Services in the Meru County Assembly, I believe renovation is not viable for several reasons. The current land is inadequate for a Level Six hospital, which requires substantial space for various departments and to accommodate our growing population’s health needs,” read the letter in parts.
He also said there is inadequate drainage and sewage system noting that the existing infrastructure poses significant health risks, as the drainage and sewage systems cannot handle increased patient load.
“Renovating the current structures would require a complete overhaul, akin to constructing a new facility. Given these issues, I strongly recommend constructing a new Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital, potentially on land from Gitooro ASK showgrounds,” said Kiongozi.
He said the new facility would serve not just Meru county residents but also the Upper Eastern Region thus addressing the rising health challenges like non-communicable diseases and cancer.
“Funding could be sought from the UK government for compensation related to past nuclear waste disposal, advocating for the new hospital and essential infrastructure improvements. If unsuccessful, securing a government loan is a viable option,” said Kiongozi.
He said since health is wealth, the people of Meru and the wider region deserve quality healthcare.
“I hope my suggestions will be taken seriously, and I am ready to further discuss these proposals. Thank you for your attention,” concluded the letter.
